Abstract

This study examines the repairs that appear in Will Smith's utterances on The Ellen Show. This talk show is famous for its exciting and information-based topics about the daily life of the guest stars. In this case, many speech errors appear in a conversation, and sometimes there are corrections to problem sources from speakers related to understanding, speaking, and hearing, it is called repairs. Therefore, the researcher answered several research questions related to the problem of implementing repair strategies due to the influencing factors found in a talk show. The researchers in this study will answer two questions: (1) What types of repairs are expressed by Will Smith in The Ellen Show, and (2) What factors initiate Will Smith to repair?. This research uses a descriptive qualitative approach. This research is related to data analysis that examines the types of repairs and the factors of repair. The researcher collected data by transcribing two Will Smith videos on The Ellen show using the verbatim transcription. Then, the researcher identified the types of repairs and their causal factors by applying the code. After that, the researcher classified the data according to the types and factors spoken by Will Smith. This study found four types of repairs used by Will, a total of 22 types ofrepairs. Every type of repair found in Will Smith's speech most often used by him is self-initiated self-repair. This occurs to maintain harmony between the interlocutors and avoid misunderstandings during the conversation by resolving root causes, such as speech errors. The use of self-initiated self-repair by the speaker clarifies his speech and aims to convey speech to the public clearly and develop and maintain self-awareness in conversation. In addition, the researcher also found three repair factors that show a person's relationship to making repairs, which often appear in this study. In these social factors, Will Smith maintains his image in front of the community, so he is careful or often reaffirms his words, so there is no miscommunication. The results of the improvement analysis also show that repair does not occur solely because of the speaker's fault. Based on the analysis results, the researcher found that with repair, one can convey the meaning of the words and reaffirm the feelings to be expressed.
