Abstract
The study aimed to investigate the types of expressive language disorder of DID character in the Split movue. This research only focuses on the utterances and context of the chosen character, Hedwig, a nine-year-old child and one of the main characters’ identities. The researcher used Carroll (2008) theory of expressive language disorder classification. There are two lists of problems in this study: (1) what kinds of expressive language disorder are found in the utterances of the DID character named Hedwig in Split movie and (2) how does the character Hedwig experience the expressive language disorder in Split movie. The researcher uses a qualitative descriptive method in purpose to conduct a detailed and coherent description from the topic of the study. The data were collected by first, downloading the script of Split movie. The transcription was analyzed by identifying the types of expressive language disorder and classifying the data based on suitable codes. Then, the researcher continued by identifying the context of the utterances stated by the character. This study reveals five types of expressive language disorder suffered by Hedwig the main character, such as alveolar articulation disorder, velar articulation disorder, labiodental articulation disorder, voice disorder, and stuttering. Hedwig suffered from articulation disorder in which he can not produce a speech sound distinctly. Hedwig suffered from voice disorder, in which he can not control the quality of his voice. Hedwig also suffered from stuttering, in which he often gets disrupted when he speaks. Meanwhile, the researcher did not find any phonological disorder in Hedwig’s utterances. From the data found, there are 171 occurrences of expressive language disorder suffered by Hedwig with the most common type that appeared is articulation disorder (alveolar type). Moreover, the results also showed the situation of Hedwig’s utterances such as happy, anger, sad, and panic. The most common situation found in Hedwig’s utterances is the anger situation. Besides Hedwig’s brain damage from post-traumatic condition, the situation in Hedwig’s utterances also greatly influenced the emergence of expressive language disorder.
