Abstract
The study aims to explore Lily Bloom's experiences of domestic violence in the novel It Ends With Us written by Colleen Hoover. In the story, Lily shares her perspective on domestic violence as a witness and victim. This study has three research questions, (1) How is Lily described as an adolescent in the novel; (2) How is Lily as an adult described in the novel; (3) What is the lesson that emerges after witnessing and experiencing domestic violence for Lily. This study applies descriptive qualitative approach to analyze the issue being studied. This study uses descriptive method to describes in depth Lily Bloom's lived experiences of domestic violence as a witness and victim as well as how domestic violence affects Lily’s characterizations through the narrative and dialogue of the novel It Ends With Us. Furthermore, this study also analyzes what lessons Lily gained from her experience of domestic violence. This study reveals that as a witness of domestic violence, Lily experienced this by observing her parents abusive relationship, bravely defending her mother who was abused by her father, and expressing frustration with her mother choices. The domestic violence she witnessed as a teenager had an impact on her social life, and it also influenced her perspective on relationships and men. Furthermore, as a victim of domestic violence, Lily experiences many obstacles in her complex relationship with her husband, Ryle. When she became a victim of domestic violence, her behavior, attitude, and perspective were affected. Moreover, the lesson that emerges for Lily after witnessing and experiencing domestic violence is breaking the cycle of abuse, the importance of empathy to the victims of violence, and the need to set clear boundaries.
