Abstract
The physical environment of classroom management is the seating arrangement. Seating arrangement is an important part of classroom management during the learning process. Where seating arrangement will decide how the activities in the class would be run. To make speaking activity in the classroom run optimally, English teachers should think about the best way of seating arrangement that is appropriate with the activity of speaking. This study aims to investigate how English teachers select the type of seating arrangement and its challenge in managing seating arrangement during speaking activity at MA YTP Kertosono Boarding School. This study employed a qualitative design to investigate the problem by observing the speaking activity, interviewing the English teachers, and distributing questionnaires to the students. This study found that English teachers applied orderly rows and separated tables of seating arrangement during speaking activity in the classroom. Orderly row was applied in implementing English conversation practice, then a separate table was applied in implementing small group discussion. Moreover, this study found the challenge that it is difficult for English teachers to manage varied seating arrangements because of the limited classroom condition. Where this difficulty makes speaking activity not run effectively, and the goal of speaking activity could not be achieved optimally. As a result, the findings of this study may provide fresh information to other English teachers related to seating arrangement during speaking activity. Where English teachers need to be able to create an activity of speaking that fulfills the target of learning, and is appropriate to do based on the classroom condition. Moreover, the finding of this research also implies that further researchers need to develop the learning activity that considers the aspects of classroom management, for example the sitting arrangement to promote learning activities.
