Abstract
This research examines the types of conversational implicatures and flouting maxims found on the Rubber Soul album. There are several research questions studied, including (1) What types of conversational implicatures are found in The Beatles' Rubber Soul album, (2) What are the flouting maxims of conversational implicature used in The Beatles Rubber Soul album. The researcher addressed these issues through a qualitative descriptive approach, employing conversational implicature theory and Grice's principles of flouting maxims from 1975. The lyrics analyzed in this study were sourced from the transcript of the Rubber Soul album, which was thoroughly reviewed multiple times to ensure the necessary data was collected. This study identified two types of conversational implicatures in each song on the album, along with three types of flouting maxims arising from the conversational implicatures observed. In total, there were 22 instances of conversational implicatures and flouting maxims in the album's lyrics. From the analysis, generalized conversational implicature was found to be the most prevalent with six instances, while particularized conversational implicature followed closely with five instances out of a total of eleven. Generalized conversational implicature frequently appears because listeners do not require specific knowledge to understand the singer's message. Additionally, there were four types of flouting maxims, with a total of eleven instances. The flouting maxims included three each of quantity, quality, and relation, and two of manner.
