Abstract
This study aims to analyse the impoliteness strategies reflected in assertive acts, found in the speech of the main character in the TV series Wednesday named Wednesday Addams, a smart girl who can be called a detective with her psychic abilities, but tends to be disliked by the people around her with impolite speech. The researcher is interested in investigating the impoliteness used by Wednesday Addams because as far as is known, very few studies on impoliteness strategies use mystery drama films as the main research. In addition, Wednesday's spontaneous and creative use of language is also the reason for choosing the tv series. There are two problems to be solved in this study, namely: (1) types of assertive acts used by the main characters in Wednesday TV series and (2) impoliteness strategies reflected in assertive acts used by the main characters in Wednesday TV series. This research uses a qualitative descriptive approach. The textual analysis conducted applied descriptive study which was considered appropriate to analyse the main character's conversation through the script of tv series Wednesday. The data was collected by first copying the script of the TV series Wednesday. The researcher collected data from the utterances in the Wednesday series. Then continued by highlighting the utterances that contain impoliteness, and which are included in the illocutionary act, giving codes to each type of impoliteness strategy and illocutionary act which are then classified into a table. The strategies of impoliteness and illocutionary act are classified by the researcher based on the theory of Jonathan Culpeper and John Searle. This study found seven types of assertive acts, namely stating, telling, suggesting, informing, reminding, reporting, and criticising. Although not all types of assertive acts have elements of impoliteness such as remind, report, and criticise. The researcher found that negative impoliteness is most often reflected in assertive acts, stating used by the main character in the Wednesday tv series. In addition, the types of impoliteness strategies found can also be reflected in assertive acts which include: stating, telling, suggesting, and informing. The main character in the Wednesday tv series uses incivility strategies that reflect assertive acts to emphasise her opinion, as well as her belief in something as true and uses language as a form of disappointment, and frustration.
