Abstract

Sodium benzoate is a food additive in the form of a preservative which is generally added directly to food or carried out in a dissolving process first. Use of sodium benzoate that exceeds quality standards can cause negative effects on the body, one of which is kidney function. A plant in Indonesia that has the potential to improve kidney function is gambier (Uncaria gambir Roxb.). This study aims to determine the effect of administering gambier extract and the optimum dose of gambier extract on the kidney histopathology of mice induced by sodium benzoate. Gambir extract was given orally to 6 groups, each group consisting of 4 female mice. The negative control group was given no treatment, the positive control group was given sodium benzoate 500 mg/kgbb, groups P1, P2, P3, P4 were given gambier extract at doses of 50 mg/kgbb, 100 mg/kgbb, 150 mg/kgbb, and 200 mg/kgbb. Scoring was carried out on the results of observations on the kidney tubules, then tested using One Way Anova and the Duncan follow-up test. The results showed that administration of gambier extract had the best effect at a dose of 100 mg/kgbb in improving the highest level of necrosis by reducing the percentage of damage by 41.3%.
