Abstract
The sophistication of technology in learning process has been growing among educators. One of the most popular platforms is Quizlet, a platform found in 2005 which features to help teachers deliver materials with specific features of study and game modes. Quizlet has been widely used and its merits for tertiary level in some countries has been discussed by researchers. However, only few high schools use Quizlet especially in Indonesia. In fact, SMPN 1 Surabaya has been applying Quizlet for certain times of period. Thus, this research describes the practice of using Quizlet in SMPN 1 Surabaya and investigate the students’ autonomy as consequence of applying it. The data was collected through observations and interviews. It took twice to ensure that the data of the observation is adequate. A teacher and six voluntary students were interviewed to support the main data. The study showed that Quizlet is beneficial to teach vocabulary in SMPN 1 Surabaya. It was used to deliver materials through the feature of digital flashcards. It was also used to test the students understanding through the feature of game-mode. The teacher promotes autonomous learning through involving them in a group project discussion on Quizlet, collaborative works, and allowing them to manage the order of the tasks on Quizlet. Sometimes, the teacher assigned the students using Quizlet outside the class as well.
