Abstract

This research examines the appearance of feminism in male characters in the novel Turning Point by Danielle Steel. This research has two interrelated problems: (1) How male characters are described in the novel Turning Point and (2) How the male characters demonstrate on feminism in Turning Point. This research uses a qualitative approach that provides a clear and systematic description of the issue being studied. This research uses a descriptive study by analyzing text in the form of narrative, dialogue, and conversation data through the characters Bill Browning, Tom Wylie, and Andy in the novel Turning Point. Data collection was carried out by close reading three times, looking for issues related to feminism and men. Then, classified the characteristics and feminist behavior shown by the male character are identified. The results of this research show that: (1) Some personalities have influenced Bill Browning, Tom Wylie, and Andy in demonstrating their feminist side in gender equality. Bill Browning has an understanding, honest, wise, and straightforward personality. Tom Wylie has an empathetic personality. Lastly, Andy has a family-oriented and patient personality. (2) There is a demonstration of the feminist side of the three male characters; Bill Browning shows his feminist side by supporting freedom of love from Athena, namely his ex-wife, through their divorce due to differences in life principles and through his co-worker Wendy Jones who is trapped in an affair and feels constrained. Then, Tom Wylie shows his feminist side by supporting freedom of love, namely, changing himself from a womanizer because he respects his committed relationship with Valérie without pressure and respects Valérie’s decision not to marry. Lastly, Andy showed his feminist side with freedom of career, supporting Stephanie Lawrence’s work as a doctor by sacrificing her full-time job as a journalist to become a freelance journalist and writer and providing moral support to Stephanie Lawrence, who felt she had failed as a mother because she was busy. Apart from that, Andy also showed his feminist side with freedom of love by giving Stephanie Lawrence the option of separate because he knew that Stephanie Lawrence was trapped in love with her co-worker in France.
