Abstract
The research examines the construction of masculinity in the main character Edward Kenway in the novel "Assassins Creed: Black Flag" by Oliver Bowden. This novel tells the story of Edward Kenway who lives his life to gain wealth and honor by becoming a privateer, even becoming a pirate. Still, Edward Kenway is also drawn into the conflict between the ancient orders of Assassins and Templars. Therefore, in this study, the author will answer the problem formulation in this research, namely how Edward Kenway built his masculinity. This research uses a qualitative descriptive approach to obtain a clear and systematic description of the phenomenon being studied. Data was collected by reading the novel "Assassins Creed: Black Flag" by Oliver Bowden, then taking snippets of narrative and conversations processed as data. The data was then analyzed to identify Edward Kenway's masculinity identity from the entire story of his journey. The results of the study show that Edward Kenway's masculinity does not only have one masculinity identity, but three masculinities occur in Edward Kenway. there is hegemony masculinity, a dominant form of masculinity that emphasizes men's power over women and subordination to other forms of masculinity, then complicity masculinity, a form of masculinity that is not dominant but still benefits from hegemonic masculinity norms without fully affirming them, and finally marginalization masculinity, a form of suppressed masculinity or devalued due to factors such as race, class, or sexual orientation, and lack access to hegemonic power. The masculinity that is dominant in Edward Kenway is the hegemony masculinity that existed in Edward from a young age until he became a father, but this does not make Edward Kenway permanently become hegemony masculinity, it can shift to other masculinity according to the conditions that occur in Edward Kenway
