Abstract

This research aims to discuss violations of the four maxims proposed by Paul Grice in conversations between characters in the novel The ABC Murders. However, the researcher selected Poirot as the main character in the novel because Poirot often breaks maxims. This research has two problem formulations: (1) What maxim is violated by the main character in the novel The ABC Murders, and (2) Why does the main character violate this maxim in the novel The ABC Murders? Researchers used qualitative descriptive methods to analyse data. To collect data, the researcher read the novel first, underlined the conversational sentences that violated the four maxims, interpreted the conversational sentences in the novel The ABC Murders because Poirot used several foreign languages , and classified them according to the type of maxim that was violated in accordance with the theory put forward by Paul Grice. The results show that Poirot breaks the proverbial rule. Because Poirot conveys unclear information, such as speaking using figurative language, and Poirot or other characters deliberately violate maxims, such as providing incomplete information, or being reluctant to provide information. Researchers found 30 conversation sentences, and there were 40 data, 11 data violations of the maxim of quality, 4 violations of the quantity maxim, and 25 data violations of the maxim of manner. Researchers found that proverbs were often used in conversations between Poirot and the characters in the novel.
