Abstract

This research aims to examine proverbial flouts in conversation. The author studies proverbial flouting maxims to find the utterances in the film A Man Called Otto. This movie tells the story of a man who is traumatized by the death of his loved one, so the neighbors consistently want to help the main character change from his bad life by giving advice. That’s why in this study the author will answer the problem formulation in this research, namely (1) What are the maxims flouted by the main character and the neighbors in A Man Called Otto movie (2) What are the reasons for flouting maxims used by the Main Character in A Man Called Otto movie.This research uses a descriptive qualitative approach to analyze data. The data in this research is the utterances of all actors in the movie, which focuses on the flouted utterances used by the main character and the neighbors in the A Man Called Otto movie. Data was collected by transcribing conversations in the movie. Then the data was analyzed based on the types of flouting maxims using Grice’s theory (1975). The results of this research show that all types of flouting of maxim were flouted by the main character and the neighbors with a total of 30 data. The types of the flouting maxim of relevance are the maxim that is most often used by the main character and the neighbors with a percentage of 37% or 11 utterances. Types of the flouting maxim of manner with a percentage of 30% or 7 statements. Then the the flouting maxim of quality with a percentage of 27% or 8 utterances, and the last one is the flouting maxim quantity which is rarely used with a percentage of 7% or 2 utterances. Based on the results of the reasons for the main character flouting the maxims, the researcher found 2 reasons. The first reason is the lack of interest in communication doesn’t like talking to other people who have no purpose or business. The second reason the main character avoids conversations is when there are questions related to the past in his life, he doesn’t want other people to know about the personal problems he is experiencing, and he doesn’t like other people interfering in his life.
