Abstract
The issue of women’s authority in the household is often debated, especially in the context of the interpretation of Qur’anic verses. Through the YouTube channel Tafsir Al-Ma’rifah Study, Musthafa Umar discusses several verses about women's authority, one of which is Surah al-Nisa>’ verses 34-35. The verse is often used as a basis for male leadership in the family. However, some of his statements, such as the view on women's limitations in the political sphere and men's superiority in doing many wills, show a patriarchal bias. These statements reinforce male dominance and place women in an inferior position. In this research, a qualitative research type method with literature method data collection was used. This research aims to describe Musthafa Umar’s interpretation of the verses on women’s authority in the household and analyse the critical discourse of the interpretation using Norman Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) theory. The results showed that Musthafa Umar interpreted verses about women’s authority, such as Surah al-Nisa>’ verses 19, 34-35, and 127-128, by emphasising the importance of fair treatment of women. However, in the interpretation of Surah al-Nisa>’ verse 34-35, there is a tendency of patriarchal bias that highlights the weakness of women in the political sphere and emphasises the advantages of men as leaders. Critical discourse analysis of the text dimension reveals that Musthafa Umar’s communicative and humorous delivery style is influenced by his educational background and regional origin. The discursive practice he builds not only conveys religious knowledge but also builds a discourse that connects interpretative values with the modern social context. As for social practice, it shows that the YouTube channel Kajian Tafsir Al-Ma’rifah has successfully utilised digital media to convey Islamic values in an adaptive manner, by respecting traditional norms, and supporting the protection of women’s dignity in the household
