Abstract

The study aimed to investigate the use of language styles by the commentators in the five key moments of a match from the 2024 Carabao Cup Final Liverpool FC vs Chelsea FC and the factors that influenced the three football commentators to use language style. The problems of this study are: 1. What are the types of language styles used by the football commentators in the 2024 Carabao Cup final match?; 2. What factors that influence the football commentators to use language style in the commentary of the 2024 Carabao Cup final match? Furthermore, the benefits of this study are to enhance the understanding of language style study from the commentary by the football commentators and to gain insight into the factors that influence the commentators to utilize the language style in the commentary of this match. This study applied a qualitative descriptive approach in relation to the use of clear and systematic descriptions of the phenomena being studied. A descriptive study in the text form analysis was used in this study to analyze the commentaries from the three commentators of this match through the downloaded transcript of the video. All the required data were collected by first transcribing the video of the 2024 Carabao Cup Final match. The transcription was then analyzed by identifying the types of language styles according to Joss's theory and applying suitable commentary in the appropriate text. The analysis was continued by investigating the factors that influenced the commentators' use of language styles in the commentary using Holmes's social model theory. This study proved that there were four types of language styles used by the three commentators. 35 data of consultative style, 14 data of casual style, 1 data of formal style, 1 data of frozen style, and the intimate style was not found in this study. The three commentators for this match, mainly use the consultative style while commentating. This domination proved that the three commentators maintain the professionalism of a commentator while handling such a spontaneous commentary in an informal event. The lack of intimate style used by the commentators showed that the professionalism of a sports commentator is a strict obligation to apply while commentating. This study also proved that the factors that influenced the three commentators to use the language style in the five key moments of this match are based on four factors, specifically the participants, situation and topic, and function.
