Abstract
The role of teacher of the Qur’an (guru ngaji) in Muslim rural society is essential. Moreover, its existence is so well respected and its social identity is very influential in the structure of rural communities. Naturally, there has been a social convention, in which the typology of teacher of the Qur’an is divided into two; teacher of the Qur’an is called ustadz and teacher of the Qur’an is called kiai. Religious services provided by the teacher of the Qur’an are based on the motivation to spread the science of religion to the people and the call of Islam (dakwah). This theological spirit encourages teacher of the Qur’an to educate students or young shoots of Islam (santri) into the Qur'anic generation; generation of this country who have akhlak al-karimah, honesty, integrity and strong character. Thus, it can be said that the services of religious education (non-formal) that are given to children in the village is an alternative and the right answer to overcome the formal education in formal schools that is considered to have failed in providing character education to their students. The factor of strong religious spirit makes the teaching and educational activities of the Qur'an and Dirosah Islamiyah still alive and growing in the middle of the current onslaught of modernity and globalization that seemingly more pronounced in rural area.
