Abstract

The study aims to explore the characterization and character development that occurs in the character of Helen in the novel Still Life with Tornado. This novel tells the story of a wife who survives a marriage with an abusive man for several years until she finally decides to file for divorce. Therefore, the researcher answers two problems of the study, namely (1) how is Helen characterized in the novel (2) what factors make Helen’s character change in the novel. This study uses a qualitative approach to obtain deeper results about the issue being studied. The researcher also uses a descriptive method to explain data about Helen's characterization and the differences in character that occur in Helen. The data collection process is carried out by grouping narratives in the novel that show the characterization and character development of Helen's character. The results of this study show that Helen's characterization in the novel Still Life with Tornado can be divided into two, namely, as a mother and as a workingwoman and wife. Helen's characterization as a mother is described as someone who always prioritizes the needs of her children. Helen is also a wife who always tries to do anything to maintain her marriage to her husband. In addition, Helen is a responsible type of woman and always keeps the agreements and promises she makes. This study also found that the character changes that occurred in Helen were driven by her family circumstances and Helen's desire to protect herself and her children.
