Abstract

The study aims to examine how the Rivas children survive without the presence of both parents in Malibu Rising by Taylor Jenkins Reid. This novel tells how the Rivas children, after the death of their mother, must survive at an age that is still not old enough. Therefore, in this study, the author will answer the formulation of the problem, namely (1) How is the relationship in Rivas family? (2) How do they survive after the death of their mother?. This study uses a qualitative descriptive approach to get answers to problems with clear and systematic descriptions. This study uses a qualitative descriptive approach to reveal problems using narratives, dialogues, and conversations in the Rivas family in the novel Malibu Rising by Taylor Jenkins Reid. This study uses the theory of narratology by Mieke Bal to analyze the first problem formulation and the theory of existence by Jean-Paul Sartre to analyze the second problem formulation. This study uses primary data in the form of original texts from Malibu Rising by Taylor Jenkins Reid, and other data sources are academic research in the form of journal articles, websites, and trusted books. The study results found that in the life of the Rivas family, the relationship that occurs in their family is very unique, where June and Mick, as husband and wife, experience many problems due to the imbalance of their roles in the family. Second, the relationship between the Rivas family children and their mothers is much better than the relationship between their fathers. Finally, regarding the relationship between siblings, researchers found that the relationship between Nina, Jay, Kit, and Hud is very close, where they complement each other and protect each other. Researchers also found that the Rivas children chose to survive independently and not depend on their father, who no longer cares about them, or on the social department.
