Abstract
This study aims to: (1)Map the culture of local society against the annual flooding in the area of Tempe lake in Wajo South Sulawesi. (2) To identify in depth the various responses made from local rituals of the annual flooding at Tempe lake in Wajo South Sulawesi. (3) To conduct an integrated study of the phenomenon of natural disaster that response the annual floods with local society in Tempe lake in Wajo South Sulawesi. This study was a descriptive research with a qualitative approach. Data collection techniques in this study is the observation technique, interview techniques, and technical documentation. Analysis of data using interactive way, starts with data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion / verification. The results of this study indicate that: (1) The ways of local culture by the public in managing Tempe lake in Wajo South Sulawesi are the Rights of ongko and Maccerak Tappareng. Ongko right is lawculture that was bornbythe management of Tempe lake to be more equitable, environmentally friendly and continuously. Ongko rights includes the right of cappeang Ongko, palawang, bungka toddo', Salo' Salo 'and pakkaja Lalla'. (2) Local Genius or indigenous knowledge related to the response of local society as a form of environmental adaptation to theflood. Tempe lake is Maccerak Tappareng Ritual. There is a strong belief that theTempelake in the guard by messengers of God which will give life and prosperous to the society around Tempe lake. And in other side will bring disaster if the society does not communicate with the "Guardians of Lake". One form of communication that is still strongly defended by the local community of tempe lake lead by Maccoa Tappareng as well as chiefs and as the wisest people to lead the societies through giving Ulu Tedong. (3) Construction of a dwelling house is also a model of local adaptation facing the annual flooding. House of local society adapted to form floating houses and houses on stilts.
