Abstract

This research explores how outsiders in Jennifer Lynn Barnes' The Inheritance Games affect the development between the Hawthorne siblings. The main objective is to examine how inheritance, sibling rivalry, parental absence, and the presence of outsiders affect the dynamics and relationships among siblings in the family. This research addresses two critical issues in the novel: (1) how Avery, as an outsider, influences the development of the Hawthorne brothers' relationships in Jennifer Lynn Barnes's The Inheritance Games and (2) how these developments shape the family dynamics in Jennifer Lynn Barnes's The Inheritance Games. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method to analyze character interactions, behaviors, and emotional responses in the novel The Inheritance Games. By doing close reading, the researcher analyzed the development of the relationship between Avery and the Hawthorne brothers based on the characters, their dialogues, and the structure of the story, focusing only on the text without paying attention to the external context. The research revealed that Avery's arrival and involvement in the Hawthorne family changed the relationship between the Hawthorne brothers. Initially, the Hawthorne brothers' relationship was shaped by the absence of a strong parental figure and characterized by rivalry and emotional distance. Avery's arrival changed this fragile relationship, causing a shift in power dynamics and fostering new forms of trust and connection between the siblings. This research contributes to the understanding that family systems influence relationship development, especially those characterized by rivalry, lack of emotional support, and parental absence.
