There are three main research questions explored in this article: How are the characteristics of Islamic humor stories that are spread out in pesantrens of Banten? what is the cultural meaning of Islamic humor stories for the community of pesantrens in Banten? and how is their existence among the rising of populer cultures supported by the mushroom growth of information-technology in this modern era? This article is a field research using ethnographical method based on anthropological perspective. To analyze the data, the researcher uses structural-functional approach. Library research, participant-observation, and depth-interview are methodes used to collect the data. Story or folklore is a part of literatures that posses a unique character. It is adapted from either fictive story or the real story (non-fiction); it becomes a plot of life journey by moral message containing the purpose of live and the way how to interact with other creatures. Folklore is a fantasy or imagination of human thought told from generations to generations. Another view states that folklore is merely fictive or imaginative story. Folklore is a phenomenon that almost always appears in every culture of societies all over the world. There are various kinds of folklores that we can find in our live; one of them is humor folklore (humor story). Beside it has entertaining character for the readers or listeners, humor folklore also has cultural meaning and moral values. Hence, many humor folklores are queath from generations to generations both in oral stories or in story book as a media to entertain and to educate the morality of young generations in order that they have a noble character as contained in those humor folklores. Islamic humor folklores becomes a part of Islamic literatures that are frequently ignored and considered having no cultural meaning and no moral values, and only for entertaining. If we observe and analyze the meaning and social context where the folklores appear, we may see the cultural meaning reflected in such folklores. In pesantrens of Banten, there are many humor folklores that are often expressed either by kyai or santri. Telling Islamic humor stories becomes one of the strategies used by kyai and santri to make them unbored during studying the yellow books or during living in pesantrens. One of the examples of moral values contained this type of folklore is how a kyai, a santri, and a Muslim should have a certain attitude and act in their daily life.
