Abstract

In this thesis, the researcher discusses the two main characters, Holly and Greg, in the novel Thirteen-year Crush by Jess Jefferies. The aim of this study is to analyze the romantic relationship between the two protagonists, Holly and Greg. The novel employs the narrative technique of multiple points of view (multiple POV), which enables the researcher to also examine how their romantic relationship develops through the differing perspectives of each main character. Accordingly, this research addresses the following questions: (1) How are Holly and Greg characterized in Thirteen-year Crush by Jess Jefferies (2) How do Holly and Greg perceive their romantic relationship. This study applies the theory of New Criticism to analyze characterization and plot within the novel. A qualitative descriptive method is used, primarily employing the library research approach. The researcher collects data from various sources, including journal articles, books, and theses. The data are selected and organized according to the research topic. The analysis involves identifying characterization and the plot of the romantic relationship through the dual perspectives of the two main characters in Thirteen-year Crush by Jess Jefferies. The findings indicate that Holly’s personality complements that of Greg's personality. Their differing traits create a balanced relationship, with Greg acting as a source of support and comfort for Holly, while Holly gradually learns to become more confident through Greg’s presence. Furthermore, the use of multiple POV in the novel allows readers to gain a deeper understanding of each character’s perspective in every conflict that arises. From Holly’s point of view, Greg’s presence provides her with a sense of safety and freedom she had not previously experienced. From Greg’s perspective, he is always willing to act as a protector, ready to support Holly through difficult situations, demonstrating his deep sense of responsibility, affection, and care for her. Thus, this study highlights how characterization in the novel not only shapes the individual identities of the characters but also plays a crucial role in the dynamics of their relationship. In addition, the multiple POV technique proves effective in offering a deeper understanding of how each character perceives and responds to their relationship.
