Abstract

This study analyzes the rebellion committed by Frederick Douglass and Harriet Ann Jacobs in their narratives, Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass and Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl by Harriet Ann Jacobs. This research has three research problems: (1) How does Frederick describe his rebels to American slavery? (2) How does Harriet describe her rebels to American slavery? (3) What are the similarities and differences between Frederick and Harriet's rebels through their narratives? This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach to analyze how slavery and rebellion are portrayed in the Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass and Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl through the two narrators, who had different experiences in slavery and rebellion in the narrative. In addition, this study uses the sociological literature by Ian Watt. The data collection technique in this study is by reading, understanding, and then classifying the points that describe the rebellion committed by Frederick and Harriet. The results show that both narrators, who were enslaved people in South America, rebelled against their enslavers and the system. Frederick rebelled through education, creating a school for enslaved people, resisting his master, and escaping to the North. Frederick described education, South American religion, and Confederate law as influencing his rebellion. Harriet rebelled by resisting her master's depraved lust, using pregnancy as a weapon, manipulating, and escaping to the North. Harriet describes South American religion, Confederate law, and suffering as a slave girl as factors that influenced her rebellion. Frederick and Harriet had different models of rebellion towards slavery in America and the similarity that both escaped to the North.
