Translingual Practices of Students' Writing of Short-Stories in English

Due to English speakers’ diverse social culture background, the potential challenge and difficulties faced by students deal with using English for communication. Previous studies have found translingual practices in student’s academic writing and authors’ fictional but not yet explored translingual practice in students’ short-stories. This study investigates translingual practice on students to bridge that potential challenge through writing short-stories. This study implements Qualitative study using content analysis, by analyzing 3 students' short-stories to show the translingual practice in their work in 2 parts, including translingual strategies and rhetorical style through content analysis in their document. The findings reveal students perform the translingual practices including translingual strategies and rhetorical style and that all parts appear in their short-stories. Those parts show how students construct their short-stories through the meaning-making, creativity, and sequencing of the story. Moreover, the implication of translingual practices can help students convey their ideas more freely. This can be a reference for the education field to give freedom for students to create creative writing.
