Abstract

Nowadays, English has seen as the most important skill that everyone should have. This phenomenon motivated some of Universities in Indonesia including UIN Sunan Ampel Surabaya to make an obligation about TOEFL test. In UIN Sunan Ampel Surabaya, the organization which responsible for holding the TOEFL-like test is language development center (P2B) of UIN Sunan Ampel Surabaya. Unfortunately, the validity of TOEFL-like test is never been tested before. Therefore, the researcher held this study in order to measuring the construct validity of TOEFL-like test.The setting of the study was UIN Sunan Ampel Surabaya and the subjects are 183 student of Dakwah and Communication faculty. This study used descriptive method. The data in this study were the question’s sheet and the students’ answers of TOEFL-like test. The instrument of this research is in form of documents. The documents were applied in order to know the construct validity of the test. The researcher uses factor analysis in measuring the construct validity of TOEFL-like test. The result shows that the construct validity of TOEFL-like test at EIP is not good. There is some test item which rotated in the rotating factors step of factor analysis. Some of rotated test items are 20, 102, 111, 106, 112, 62, 66, 67, 85 and 83. The rotation of test items is indicating that test items are not able to measured what it tends to assessed.From the finding and discussion, the suggestion for P2B should evaluate and revise the test items of TOEFL-like test which rotated in factor analysis. The indicators need to be more specific before making up the test.
