Abstract

This research was conducted because the students seemed rarely speaking English although they were the English Education Department students. This research used the descriptive quantitative method which the instrument used was questionnaire. And the result showed that the three factors involved in this research, caused the students rarely speak English. The dominant one was the contextual factor because it had the most point; the psychological and the linguistic factors had lower point than the contextual factor. And the reason why the students rarely speak English was categorized for each type of factors. There were 4 reason for contextual factor; they thought that they did not have the same level as their friends’ speaking skills, there was not much exposure, they were afraid that their partners did not understand, and they did not have partners to speak English at home. For linguistic factor, there were 3; they pay more attentions to the content, they rarely practiced their speaking, and they did not have much proper pronunciation. And for the psychological, there were 3; they were not really sure about their speaking skill, they were ashamed of the corrections for their mistakes, and they were not confident compared to their partners’ skills.
