Abstract

Language style expresses human feeling. It produces language by oral and written form. In writing, the writer puts the utterances form in spoken language. While, in oral form, the speaker delivers a message in order to be a heard and know what the speaker wants directly. Related with Lackoff (1975) that language style used between man and women to draw attention, influence and also persuade other. Based on Joos (1967) in his Five O’clocks is devided into five types, those are Frozen, Formal, Consultative, Casual and Intimate. All the types have characterization and function such as frozen which is actually used in religion ceremonial, casual which is appropriating in relax situation and intimate commonly in conversation with close friend. This study has provided the analysis of using language style in conversation spoken and written. The researcher uses qualitative design. Descriptive qualitative method is a research method which describes systematically a situation or area of interest factually and accurately. Meanwhile, qualitative research is used because the research is based on data in the form of words, not as numbers. The research data are from conversation which has relation with four kinds of language style. The mostly used is casual style which has 169 data, consultative style which has 14 data, formal style which has 5 data, and the last is intimate style which has 26 data. The first is casual style, is used for the conversation in our relaxed or normal situation that is appropriate to the conversations with our friends or sometimes members of a family. the second is consultative style, is generally employed in a semi-formal communication situation, such as between military of different rank, this style is one type of language style. Third is formal style, This style is used in a formal situation such as in graduation ceremony. The last is intimate style, also a completely private language developed within families, lovers, and the closest of friends. Finally, the researcher hopes this thesis could give contribution for the next researcher, the teacher and the students. Moreover, it is recommended for the next researcher who will do the same research to deepen the material on the language style in LINE conversation but in another form because in this research has proven the characteristic of language style in conversation.
