Abstract

Assessment is one of important parts in teaching and learning. It is a process of identifying students’ progress, planning future materials, designing interesting learning activities and encouraging students in learning. However, to obtain comprehensive information of students’ real ability and progress, teachers should be able to construct test items. It is a technique to measure students’ ability, knowledge and performance. This research aimed to explore pre-service teachers’ challenges and strategies in constructing test items. There are five pre-service teachers participated in this research. This research involved pre-service teachers who had taken Language Assessment Course, had made test for senior high school, and had score for this unit. To answer the research questions, this study interviewed five participants about some questions such as experience in constructing test items, challenges and strategies in constructing test items. The findings showed that there were five challenges identified in the study. The challenges in constructing multiple choice items are writing good sentences, selecting the options for multiple choice items, balancing the skills within one test, and finding references. Moreover, the challenge in constructing essay item is designing rubric for open-ended questions. One challenges faced in designing rubric is specifying criteria and standards clearly. Writing good sentences refers to pre-service teachers’ grammar while writing the test. Then, there are some considerations in writing the options for multiple choice test such as the stem should be meaningful, the stem should be relevant with the material, and etc.From the mentioned challenges, designing rubric for open-ended questions was the most challenge skill that these pre-service teachers encountered.The study also found that ensuring the questions in the test in line with the syllabus and the given materials, writing test online, designing the test clearly and subjective, and writing a clear rubric were pre-service teachers’ strategies in constructing test items. This helped them ensure the suitability of test with the students’ level and achieve test purposes.
