Abstract

Some researcher have begun to make distinctions between anxieties produced by the four language skills: speaking, listening and reading. While writing anxiety has recently become popular in the field of language acquisition, most studies on writing anxiety have been conducted in first language (L1). Less is known about writing anxiety levels for second language (L2) learners that actaully has an important role for students whom studying writing proposal in foreign language class (EFL). In addition, most of the research conducted in this area has been quantitative in nature. Possibly due to the lack of qualitative research.The researcher attempted to find the answer of research problems by using qualitative approach. The purpose of this study is to fill these gaps in the literature by answering the questions about, are the students’ writing anxiety levels in proposal writing course at State Islamic University of Sunan Ampel Surabayaand the major factors cause students’ writing anxiety in proposal writing course at State Islamic University of Sunan Ampel Surabaya. By applying qualitative approach, this study used interview and writing anxiety levels was measured with English writing anxiety test (EWAT). Participants in this study were 22 undergraduate students of English Education Department in Islamic University of Sunan Ampel Surabaya in Fifth Semester year 2015/2016. The finding shows that 59% of the participants were considered to be in unusual level of writing anxiety. Their EWAT test shows a good result and catagorized as a mean writer. The dominant problem of students writing anxiety is problem in write down a background. This problem categorized as a novelty of the research problem and title factor. This problem faced by 28,6% students in proposal writing C class.
