Abstract

This research examines conversational implicature and their function in the dialogue spoken by all the characters in the movie"Don't Look Up" (2021). This movie is a sci-fi drama-comedy directed by Adam McKay. In this study, the researcher answers the formulation of the problem in the research: (1) the types of conversational implicatures spoken by all the characters in the movie and (2) the function of each type of conversational implicatures spoken by all the characters in the movie. This research used a qualitative descriptive approach to get a clear and systematic picture of the problem being analyzed. In this analysis, descriptive research is applied to analyze the conversations of all the characters in the movie script. Data was collected by identifying all utterances in the movie that contained conversational implicatures in the movie script. All conversational implicature utterances are then classified based on their respective types using the appropriate code in the text. The analysis continued by identifying the type of each utterance and describing each function of the type of conversational implicature. In the end, researcher discovered what types and functions were found in the utterances produced by all the characters in the movie. The research results show that two types of conversational implicatures are applied in this movie, namely generalized and particularized conversational implicatures. It also contains several functions, each varying depending on how the speaker conveys conversational implicatures in movie dialogue to the listener. The research results show that the generalized type of conversational implicature is the type that is most often used in the dialogue of the characters in the movie. In contrast, the particularized type is the type that is least used by the characters in the movie
