Abstract

This study aims to examine the maxim violation and the functions of violating those maxims to create humor in the Stand-Up comedy show by Dave Chappelle on YouTube Channel entitled “Netflix Is A Joke”. In this research, the researcher focuses on finding the dominant maxim violation that is used by Dave Chappelle. This study uses a qualitative descriptive approach to get a clear and systematic description of the problem that being analyzed. Data collection has been completed by identifying all utterances in the performance that contain maxim violation. The researcher used Grice’s theory to analyze the maxim violations. All maxim violation utterances then classified based on their respective types by using the appropriate code in the corresponding text. The analysis was continued by identifying the type in each utterance and describing each function of the type based on context of the utterance. In the end, the researcher found out what types of maxim violation that were most frequently used by Dave Chappelle.In the study, the researcher found that Dave Chappelle violated all of four Grice’s maxims. The study reveals that there are 21 data of maxim violations of quality, 13 data of maxim violations of manner, 9 data of maxim violations of quantity, and 5 data of maxim violations of relevance. In conclusion, the maxim violation of quality is the most dominant violation occurs in the stand-up comedy video.
