Abstract
The aim of this thesis is to identify the impoliteness strategies used by the main characters of Whiplash, Terence Fletcher and Andrew Neiman. In this movie, a young man who dreams of becoming a famous drummer is taught by a very disciplined music instructor. Therefore, rudeness is a phenomenon addressed in this movie. In connection with this, the researcher will answer the research problem formulation as follows: (1). What Impoliteness strategies are used by the Terence Fletcher and Andrew as the main character in the "whiplash" movie (2). What are the functions of impoliteness strategies used Terence Fletcher and Andrew by the main characters in the “Whiplash” Movie. This study used qualitative approach in relation to the use of clear and systematic description about the phenomena being studied. Descriptive study in textual analysis was applied in this study to analyze conversation of the main characters through the script of Whiplash. The data were collected by first transcribing the Whiplash movie. The transcription was then analyzed by identifying the types of impoliteness strategies by applying suitable codes in the appropriate text. The analysis was continued by identifying the functions of the impoliteness strategies applied by the main characters in the movie. The results of the study show that all strategies of impoliteness have been applied in this movie. Fletcher is known for providing a comprehensive set of impoliteness strategies in whiplash movies. in this context negative impoliteness strategies are most commonly used. Researcher found that Fletcher and Andrew used 28 utterances, each of which contained bald on record, positive impoliteness, negative impoliteness, sarcasm or mock politeness, and withhold politeness. Then, the most frequently found function of impoliteness in Fletcher and Andrew speech is affective impoliteness which shows that Fletcher used impolite strategies because of the increased emotional intensity when conversing with his interlocutor.
