Abstract

Reading is a critical skill in literacy that plays an important role in educational success. Students acquire and comprehend information through reading, and a solid vocabulary is essential for understanding textual material effectively. The more vocabulary students have, the easier it is for them to comprehend various text in English. This research aims to explore the correlation between students' vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension of various types of English texts. To answer that, there were two tests namely vocabulary test and reading test. The subject of this study was 39 students of IX grades at SMP YPI Baiturrahman academic year 2023/2024. This study used quantitative research and SPSS 16 to analyze the test results. The research findings reveal the correlation between students' command of vocabulary and their ability to comprehend texts material of different English text types. The Spearman analysis shows that the correlation is 0,652, which means the correlation is strong. While the value of Sig.=0.00 < 0.05. This indicates that the null hypothesis (H0) is rejected, while the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. Hence, it can be concluded that students who demonstrate a more advanced vocabulary mastery tend to indicate ability to comprehend a variety of textual material. Thus, the acquisition of vocabulary is crucial for students, as it enhances their capacity to understand texts. The greater the students' vocabulary, the better their comprehension of the intended meaning in texts.
