Abstract

The primary focus of this research is to show the use of verbal and non-verbal Islamic values and terms in the Messiah series. This study has three research problems; (1) How are verbal and non-verbal Islamic values represented in the Messiah series? (2) What Islamic terms appear in the Messiah series? (3) What is the meaning of verbal and non-verbal Islamic values and terms in the Messiah series? This research applies a qualitative method in its approach. The use of this approach aims to describe the findings of the study. Data were identified through screenshots of scenes that refer to Islamic values by referring to Roland Barthes and Pierce's theories on the capacity of verbal and non-verbal signs. The research focused on representing Islamic values and using Islamic terms by paying attention to symbols, character behavior, and verbal cues spoken by the characters, such as phrases from the Quran and hadith. After that, the researcher recorded the amount of data in a table. Results of the research show that the Messiah series succeeds in presenting verbal and non-verbal forms of Islamic values and the use of Islamic terms. For example, the verbal form of Islamic values, such as Allah Akbar expressed by the character, is a form of teaching in Islam regarding the oneness of God. On the other hand, non-verbal Islamic values, such as the practice of prayer, is a form of depiction of Islamic teachings. Then, the use of Islamic terms such as Allah shows a word that is directly related to Islam. Last, when viewed from the sign side by Roland Barthes' theory, Allah Akbar, Allah, and the practice of prayer belong to the signifier category where they function as the material of the sign and the meaning of verbal and non-verbal use of Islamic values and Islamic terms refer to the signified concept where they represent Islamic concepts and entities.
