Abstract

This study examines human motivation in the novel Twin Crowns by Katherine Webber and Catherine Doyle. This novel tells about Wren's struggle to reclaim her position as a queen. Therefore, in this study, the author will answer the research problems, which are (1) how does the main character, Wren, fulfill her needs in the novel Twin Crowns and (2) what motivates the main character, Wren, to reclaim her position as a queen in the novel Twin Crowns. This study uses a qualitative approach to examine the issues raised. The purpose of using descriptive studies in this analysis is to analyze the narrative and conversations of the characters in the novel. In addition, in this analysis, descriptive research is also used to investigate Wren's process of reclaiming her position more profoundly and her reasons for doing so. The study results show that all of the five levels of human needs (physiological needs, need for security, need for belonging and affection, need for esteem, and need for self-actualization), are fulfilled in the novel. The need for physiological has been fulfilled by her family, the need for security is fulfilled by learning martial arts, the need for love and belonging has been fulfilled by receiving her family love and falling in love with the prince's bodyguard, the need for esteem is fulfilled by seizing the princess's throne, and the need for self-actualization is fulfilled when she becomes a queen. The study also found that Wren's reasons for wanting to become queen were her unknown birth, the threatened existence of her witch family, and her grudge against the murderer of her parents.
