Abstract

This study aims to examine the similarities and differences between bad characters or villains in two horror short stories entitled "The Cask of Amontillado" by Edgar Allan Poe and "Lost Hearts" by M. R. James. The researcher chose this topic because there are bad characters who commit brutal and barbaric acts like psychopaths in both stories by famous horror writers of their time. The actions of these characters are similar to what psychopaths do in real life. There are two questions examined in this study, namely: (1) How are Montresor and Mr. Abney depicted in the two short stories? (2) How are the differences between the villains in the two texts? This study uses descriptive comparative methods to compare the similarities and differences in both two selected short stories. This method is used to collect data, compare the data, and analyze the data in details. The researcher uses the New Criticism theory as the main theory to analyze topics or issues through sentences, utterances, and other elements in the two stories. The theory is also used for analyzing the character, the characterization, and the plot. This study found that the bad characters, Montresor and Mr. Abney, in each story are villain characters. This character was also included in the psychopathic character category because Montresor and Mr. Abney have the same characteristics as a criminal and a psychopath too. In conclusion, Montresor and Mr. Abney were villains in the form of psychopaths.
