Abstract

Professionalism is the quality of someone skilled and trained. Professionalism is usually associated with a profession, a person’s ability or skills in carrying out work in their respective fields. In the novel, The Undomestic Goddess (2005), Sophie Kinsella describes the professionalism of the main character in her profession, lawyer and housekeeper. Therefore, this research examines Samantha’s professionalism as the main character in The Undomestic Goddess. This research must resolve two problems: (1) How is Samantha portrayed in The Undomestic Goddess? (2) How is Samantha’s professionalism depicted in The Undomestic Goddess?. This study uses a qualitative method. Data was collected by collecting quotations in the novel and placing them into a data table. Then, the writer classifies important data according to the research topic. After that, the writer analyzed and identified the important data obtained to find the forms of professionalism possessed by the main characters in the novel. The theory used is New Criticism, which is about character and characterization. The result of the study shows that Samantha’s depiction is divided into physical appearance, fashion style, and behavior. Samantha has a beautiful face and mouse-brown hair. Samantha has a different fashion style and behavior when she is a lawyer and a housekeeper. When she was a lawyer she wore formal clothes and when she was a housekeeper she wore casual clothes. When she was a lawyer she was hardworking and tense and when she was a housekeeper she was hardworking and relaxed. Samantha’s professionalism has a positive impact. As a result of her professionalism, she is considered a quality employee. She is reliable where she works. Samantha’s attitude when she became a lawyer was discipline, competence, intelligence, and hard work. Meanwhile, Samantha’s attitude as a housekeeper was that she was hardworking and focused and did her job well.
