Abstract

The study aims to describe the survival experienced by the protagonist characters in King and Hill’s ‘In The Tall Grass’ Short Story which shows the survival of the Demuth sibling inside the tall grass field that has Antagonist traits. There are two problems to be solved in this study, namely: (1) How is the tall grass described in Hill and King's In The Tall Grass; (2) How is the characterization of the Demuth Siblings; (3)How do Demuth's siblings survive within the tall grass field in Hill and King's In The Tall Grass. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach to the use of clear and systematic descriptions of the phenomena being studied. A descriptive study in textual analysis was applied in this study to analyze the description of the tall grass field and the action done by the Demuth siblings through the narration, dialogue, and monologue in King and Hills In The Tall Grass short story. The data were collected by first reading the whole short story on the Esquire website. here, the researcher finds some quotations and narratives from this novel that suit the issue discussed in this study. The analysis continued by describing the Tallgrass field and identifying the survival strategy used by the main characters to escape from the tallgrass field. The results of this study indicate that the tall grass field possesses antagonistic traits by preventing the Demuth siblings from escaping the Tallgrass field as their destination. After that, Becky has a persistent, cooperative, wary, kind, thoughtful, and critical character, While Cal has an innovative, Impulsive, Susceptible, and Kind character and loves his sister. For the last result Demuth siblings used several strategies those are asking for help from the officer, tracking each other voices, fighting the psychopath Ross, Burn the field, Avoid Touching The Rock, prioritizing saving their sibling, asking for Ross's help, Setting the goal, Ask For Ross's' Help, Set The Goal, and cooperate. The researcher concluded that the description of the Tallgrass field evoked the Demuth siblings’ survival instinct. The researcher explains how the main characters survive in the tall grass field.
