Abstract

Providing authentic materials for teaching listening in the classroom is essential for the students’ linguistic ability, motivation, and passion for learning a language. Authentic materials offered the cultural information and the actual language used by the native speaker so that the students can learn the pronunciation and grammar. The study aims to explore more about the teacher’s perception of using authentic materials and implementation of authentic materials in SMA Antartika Sidoarjo. In this study, one English teacher was selected to be the subject of the research. A qualitative was utilized to answer the suggested study questions. Teachers who employ authentic resources, which contain real contend created by native speakers, are more likely to see their students succeed in acquiring new knowledge, according to the research. Moreover, increasing students' motivation to study English, using real resources might help with teaching listening. The researcher also discovered that the classroom teacher faced some challenges when attempting to implement the authentic materials. These challenges included students who misunderstood the meaning of English words, students who lacked vocabulary, and students who misunderstood the pronunciation of the speakers. The findings show that the teacher's perception greatly impacted the teacher's instructional practice and the selection of the authentic materials that were taught to the students. This is implied by the fact that the teacher's perception strongly shaped the findings.
