Abstract

During the Olympic, sport news media are the common news discourse was spread during the time when Olympic was held. Sporting news media have a special treatment compared with common or daily news media. Sporting journalism have to be neutral and avoid an opinion of journalist’s personal ideology and have to remain impartial. However, Western news media and Middle Eastern news media are known have contrastive ideology and bias toward Israel and Palestine, where Palestine and Israel both are joined 2024 Olympic Games Paris. Therefore, this study aims to reveal the representation of Palestine’s participation during the 2024 Olympic Games Paris in two very contrastive ideology of Israel and Palestine that are Western and Middle Eastern news media. The chosen news media from Western news media are BBC, CNN, The Guardian, Politico, and Fox News. While for the Middle Eastern news media the researcher chooses Al-Jazeera, Al-Arabiya, Palestine Chronicle, Middle East Eye, and Anadolu Ajansi. In this research incorporates two approaches which are corpus linguistics with LancsBox and AntConc and 3-Dimension Critcal Discourse Analysis by Norman Fairclough. By using these two approaches, it can answer the problem of the study that is how Middle Eastern and Western news media portray Palestinian athlete in 2024 Olympics. Based on the quantitative and qualitative method, it deeply reveals on how Middle Eastern news media portray Palestinian athlete in 2024 Olympic Games. The researcher quantitatively processed the textual data from two corpus engine to reveal both region news media word frequency, use it for collocation analysis, and qualitatively analyze the textual data from quantitative data with help of concordance feature to reveal the context of the word in LancsBox with Critcal Discourse Analysis approach. As a result, this study reveals distinctive representation on Palestinian athlete participation in Olympic 2024 from both Western and Middle Eastern news media. the Western news media largely use conflict narrative to connect the Palestinian participation in Olympic 2024 with conflict, which leads to the victimization of athletes and frame the Palestinian athlete burdened by the war. This analysis also reveals the use of passive structure in narrating conflict, which lead to the omission of agency (Israel) of who is responsible for the war casualty in Palestine. There is also an effort by Western news media to build skepticism in Palestine’s request to ban Israel from the Olympic. This skepticism is built by criminalization of Rajoub who is the initiator of the ban request. In contrast, Middle Eastern news media reveal positive representation of Palestinian athlete participation in Olympic 2024. Middle Eastern news media connects the participation of Palestine athlete with a narrative that express “pride” and symbol of the nation. The Middle Eastern news media also contain conflict narrative with active structure to expose Israel’s war crime and dan as a form of resistance to the skepticism of the Western news media. The different representation from each region is influenced by each of the institutional ideology and broader ideology where Western news media known to bias to Israel and view Arab nations as a threat. While Middle Eastern news media voice more with Palestine and view Palestine as fellow Arab country. With the differences of representation and an attempt to challenge the skepticism by Western news media, it shows that media discourse not only functions as a means of disseminating information, but also functions as a place for dominant hegemonic and counter-hegemonic competition.
