Abstract

This study focuses on analysing the kind of flouting maxim, the strategies, the reasons, and the intended meaning in the novel American War by El Akkad, set in a war-themed dystopian setting. There are two problems that the researcher wants to address in this study, namely: (1) what kind of flouting maxim is used by the characters in the novel American War; (2) what are the strategies, reasons, and the intended meaning behind the flouting maxim used by the characters in the novel American War. This study uses a qualitative-descriptive approach to analyse all the flouting maxims found in the novel. The data were collected as sentences from the characters’ conversations. The researcher then analysed which conversation flouted the maxims according to Grice (1975) theory. The researcher copied all the flouting maxim into a single table to make the analysis easier. Then the researcher analyses the strategies of the flouting maxim using Cutting (2002) theory. Contextual analysis was then applied to interpret the pragmatic reasons and implied meaning behind each flout. This study reveals that all of the flouting maxim (quantity, quality, relevance, and manner) are present in the novel American War. Although all of the maxims are flouted, not all of the flouting maxim strategies proposed by cutting were found in the novel. The researcher successfully identified most of the strategies (too much information, too little information, hyperbole, metaphor, irony, banter, sarcasm, untrue, changing topic, irrelevant statement, ambiguous statement, disorderly statement), except for one (banter). By flouting the maxim of quality as the most used, the characters mostly used it to criticise or mock someone. While the most commonly used strategy overall is giving too much information, it serves as a friendly gesture or helps build a deeper context for the novel.
