Abstract

This study examines Christopher's mindset of the world in Mark Haddon's novel The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, which depicts the unique perspective of Christopher Boone, a teenager who perceives and interprets the world differently from others. There are three main issues addressed in this study: (1) How is Christopher's mindset facing his days? and (2) How does Christopher's mindset utilize to interact with other people?. This study employs a qualitative-descriptive approach, relying on explicit, systematic descriptions of the phenomena under investigation. Descriptive analysis examines Christopher's perceptual experiences as depicted in the novel. Data collection involved repeated readings of the text, the identification of passages that reveal Christopher's subjective experiences, and their categorization according to phenomenological concepts. An analysis was then conducted to interpret how Christopher navigates his daily life and perceives the world from his perspective. This study draws on Edmund Husserl's phenomenological theory, focusing on the description (Transcendental Phenomenology) of Christopher's experiences and interpretations. Beginning with Christopher's experiences, we can see how he interprets the world through his own logic, grounded in mathematical patterns, and how he feels threatened when meeting or socializing with others. The findings show that Christopher often perceives the world through logic and mathematical patterns, which challenges his ability to understand social cues and communicate effectively. He tends to experience intense fear and anxiety during social interactions, leading to worry and excessive fear. From all of Christopher's experiences in the novel, it becomes clear how The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time depicts Christopher's phenomenological perspective as a unique way of understanding human experience.
