Abstract

Autonomous learning is the natural ability of students to take responsibility for their own learning process, including setting personal goals and using appropriate resources to achieve results independently or with minimal external guidance. Autonomous learning can improve students' English speaking skills, such as communicating with friends and application-based exercises that can help students speak English fluently. The purpose of this study is to discoverthe autonomous strategies used by students in English speaking activities as well as the benefits, challenges, and solutions experienced by students when using autonomous learning. To identify the autonomous learning used by students at MTS Darul Ulum Waru, data was collected through interviews with 15 students and 2 English teachers. Data collection used interview guidelines. The results of this study show that the autonomous strategies they use in speaking English include listening to music, reading English books, taking courses, practicing independently, and also utilizing technology such as Duolingo and other social media to help students speak English. There are also challenges in autonomoyus learning, such as lack of confidence, fear of making grammar or pronunciation mistakes. However, there are also several solutions and benefits of autonomous learning.
