Abstract

The selection of appropriate media is crucial in the learning process, as it can boost students’ engagement and interest. In addition, practicing new media in teaching can capture students’ attention, making English lessons more enjoyable and preventing boredom with the teachers’ material. This study investigates the influence of visual media, specifically pictures, on improving students' descriptive text writing skills. Employing a quasi-experimental design, the research involved two tenth-grade classes at SMAN 12 Surabaya, each comprising 36 students, assigned to experimental and control groups. Data were collected through pretests and posttests and analyzed using SPSS 25 to assess normality and homogeneity, and to test hypotheses. The findings revealed a significant improvement in the experimental group's descriptive text-writing skills compared to the control group, as indicated by higher post-test scores. These results align with previous studies emphasizing the effectiveness of visual aids in education. This study contributes to the growing body of evidence supporting the integration of visual media in English language teaching and offers practical recommendations to enhance student learning outcomes.
