Abstract

The study is aimed in discovering the Interpersonal Metafunction in Football fans’ comments on X which shows the interpersonal meaning and the attitude depicted in the X comments of football fans. There are two questions to be answered in this study, namely: (1) How are the football fans comments structured considering the systems of mood and Modality?; (2) How is the attitude realized through the commentators linguistic choices? This study utilizes qualitative descriptive approach to provide clear categorization of the data and an adequate interpretation of the data being categorized. Descriptive study in was applied in this study to analyze the communication of football fans and the club through the comments reacting to tweets posted by the official account. The data were collected by the reading and searching for football related comments, followed by identifying the comments based on certain criteria. The suitable comments then compiled into word processing software. The data then analyzed by identifying the mood type by applying correct codes in the appropriate elements. The analysis was continued by identifying the lexical choices applied through football fans’ comments. Finally, the SFL interpretation were identified by looking at the interconnecting theme between the analysis of mood and modality followed by the analysis of attitude. This study reveals that football fans' comments utilized all of the mood types of Interpersonal Metafunction, namely Declarative type, Interrogative type, and Imperative type. The researcher also found the application of modality inside the comments. From all the analysis of interpersonal metafunction football fans show their role as the knowledge provider prior and stating it directly with certainty. The direct communication also resembles the direct evaluation mainly focusing on the player's performance. It shows that a direct way of communication promotes the easy way of conveying feelings. Overall, the way of communication interpreted as the findings helps to show the behaviour of football fans during their interaction with the football club they support.
