Abstract

This study aims to analyze politeness strategies in conversations between hosts and guests, focusing on politeness phenomena found in the talk show Tonight Show NET. This program is an informal talk show that features interactions between hosts and guest stars. The researcher addresses two research questions: (1) what types of politeness strategies occur in the conversations between the hosts and the guest star in Tonight Show NET, and (2) why certain politeness strategies are used by the hosts and the guest star in Tonight Show NET. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method to obtain a clear and systematic description of the use of politeness strategies in interaction. The data consist of utterances produced by the hosts and the guest star, Matt Shadows, in one episode of Tonight Show NET. The data were collected by transcribing the conversation in the program. The data were analyzed by identifying the types of politeness strategies based on Brown and Levinson’s theory (1987). Further analysis was conducted the reason why certain strategies were used by the hosts and the guest star, based on the sociological variables proposed by Brown and Levinson. This study reveals that three types of politeness strategies are used in the interaction between the hosts and the guest star (bald on record, positive politeness, and negative politeness), which are applied in the talk show. The researcher identified 26 utterances containing politeness strategies, consisting of 5 bald on record data, 20 positive politeness data, and 1 negative politeness datum. Positive politeness is the most frequently used strategy. This dominance indicates that both the hosts and the guest star attempt to build closeness and positive interpersonal relationships during the interaction with Matt Shadows. In addition, the results show that social distance is the most influential factor in the selection of politeness strategies. Positive politeness strategies are frequently found in this program due to the nature of Tonight Show NET as an entertainment-oriented talk show. These strategies are used to create a comfortable atmosphere, maintain good relationships, and build engaging interactions for the audience.
