Abstract

This Thesis attempts to analyze a powerful written by the French author, Albert Camus entitled The Stranger. The Stranger tells about a young Algiers man namely Meursault who comes from a simple life, but he has unique thought and action in living his life. This Thesis has two goals, the first is to know Meursault’s characterization. The second is to find out Meursault's description of Nietzsche's Existentialism concept. This thesis uses descriptive analysis method. There are several steps in using the method. Firstly is reading the story on the novel. Secondly is collecting parts that deal with the discussed issues. Thirdly, analyzes the parts by using two theories, Existentialism by Nietzsche and New Criticism as supporting theories. Finally, make conclusion from the analysis. The results of this study explain that Meursault who is described as a quiet, lack of manner, heartlessness, independent, conditional and materialistic person has been faced several situations and conditions which are in accordance with Nietzsche’s concept of Existentialism. They are the murder action as the depiction of Meursault's will to power, upholding the truth value of court process as the depiction of ubermensch, the death of the confidence as the depiction of Meursault’s god is dead and Meursault’s despair of all hopes as the depiction of his falls to nihilism.
