Abstract

This study is conducted to analyze the novel by John Michaelson entitled Muallaf. The method of the research is descriptive qualitative method to explain more details about the analysis. The writer uses psychoanalysis theory especially personality dynamic with the concept of id, ego, and superego by Sigmund Freud and new criticism to answer the statement of problem. To conduct this study, the writer takes the data from the novel Muallaf by John Michaelson. Furthermore, the writer uses library research and online sources in order to get more information in doing analysis. The result of the study shows that John’s characteristics help him easily convert him into a Muslim. Besides, there are some factors that influence him. The factors are Islam attracts John, Muslims in Indonesia: John’s neighbor and John’s partner. The conversion of John into a Muslim also has some effects. John becomes wiser and more respectful of others, from the way he speaks or from his attitude.
