Abstract

This thesis is intended to analyze language functions used by Landon as male character and Jamie as female character in A Walk to Remember movie. There are three research problems stated in this study, which are the types of language functions used by Landon and Jamie, the frequency of the language functions mostly used by Landon and Jamie, and the difference between male and female language functions of Landon and Jamie. The researcher applied descriptive qualitative method in this study. The data source of this study is the movie script of A Walk to Remember. Whereas, the data of this study are Landon and Jamie utterances which contain language functions that exist in the movie. The researcher identifies the language function by underlining and coding, the type by classifying the utterances of characters, the frequency by calculating and the difference by explaining. As the result, this investigation shows there are only seven types used by Landon and Jamie: expressive, directive, referential, metalinguistic, poetic, phatic, and commissive. By all of these, expressive function plays the most significant role in two characters. The researcher also found the difference language functions by Landon and Jamie: Landon uses expressive, directive, referential, metalinguistic, phatic, and commissive while Jamie’s uses expressive, directive, referential, metalinguistic, poetic, and phatic; the higher level is expressive function Landon 40% and Jamie 37% than the lowest level is 2% commissive for Landon and 2% phoetic for Jamie; and Landon shows the language function to the point but Jamie used the language functions more expressive, emotional, polite, long explanation and hyperbolic.
