Abstract
This study focuses on the implementation of training for the professional development of the teachers of English at Islamic junior secondary schools (MTs) in Sidoarjo, Gresik, and Malang. The training was specially aimed at improving teachers’ pedagogic competence, i.e. the mastery of English teaching strategies, including classroom management, giving instructions and feedbacks, and increasing students’ critical thinking skills. It was a qualitative study participated by five trainers and seventy teacher trainees as the subjects of the research. The data were collected by questionnaires to reveal the participants’ professional needs and program evaluation, documentation to unfold the training materials, and trainers’ reflection to describe the training instructional strategy. Having been collected, the data were sorted, described, and concluded. The results were that teachers’ strategy of teaching English was to be made more varied, interesting, communicative, and integrated. Their classroom management needed to be more learner-oriented and the teachers had to establish good rapport with the learners in order to create a conducive learning environment in the classroom. Teachers had to be more competent in providing effective instructions using the target language and clear, positive, and encouraging feedbacks. To face the industrial era 4.0, furthermore, teacher trainees had to be capable of training the students to acquire the 21st century competences (4C’s), viz. critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and communication.
