Abstract

This study tries to reveal the mental activities and values contained in the linguistic phenomena of interaction in a virtual world through facebook. This is based on the assumption that all linguistic behaviors which are observable and concrete in term of the process of interaction and communication among the interlocutors carry some hidden messages and values. The study is descriptive qualitative in nature. The data were obtained authentically from the natural setting of interaction taking place in facebook using observation and documentation. Having been collected, the data were analyzed using the techniques of analyzing qualitative data such as identification, inferences, discussion and interpretation. The finding reveals that there are various mental actions performed by the interlocutors, such as presupposition, implicature, inferences, and references. The addressors and addressees also comply with the conversational maxims despite some flouting some time. The principle of relevance is also obeyed to create coherent interaction among interlocutors. Frame is created through the initial step of the conversation, namely in the status. Communicative flow is successful in view of the quantity of rlevant utterances produced during the interaction. Finally it is suggested that the following studies be conducted focusing on other virtual interaction such as tweeter and friendsters and other professional discussion groups. It is also suggested that facebook be considered to be a strategy inlanguage teaching and learning.
